An early, massive and full Tortoiseshell Gold Cane. France, circa 1810

The rich-handle, fashioned in two different colours of gold is 2,5 cm high x 2 cm diameter is marked: Souvenir, on the terrace, it is on top of a massive and selected sienna-colour Tortoiseshell full-cane of 18 mm at it widest, it is beautifully translucent, see pictures. There are two gold eyelets of 1,5 x 1 cm. The shaft is segmented in two pieces and joined with a dark-silver cylinder shaped in the same way of the handle 2,5 cm high. Tortoiseshell canes were among the most expensive of their time because it was difficult to make, its construction involved heating, stretching and fussing of the massive tortoiseshell in technology that is now long lost.

Impressive by the contrasting marriage of Tortoiseshell and gold, the OL is 89 cm, it ends with a bimetal old ferrule. No serious dents on the gold, any cracks on the Tortoiseshell or gold, excellent condition.

Paris was specialized in tortoiseshell articles (the material came from their Caribbean colonies) and had the best artists in that field.
