Hunting Terrier by J. Howell, Walking Cane. England, circa 1900

The crutch handle is 11 cm high x 24 cm to the side x 13 cm wide. It depicts the well-carved head of a hunting Fox Terrier with glass eyes and the familiar brawn, black and white coloration, it is very fine carved and coloured. There is a 2,5 cm a gilded ring showing English marks J.H. for Jonatan Howell, the prestigious walking canes manufacturers on Victorian times. This cane has been retailed to the fancy CASA LLIBRES BARCELONA, it is the reason of the etched mark on the wood. The O.L. is 91 cm, it ends with a horn tip and with minimal signs of usage, no chips or cracks the condition is perfect.

By 1895, Henry Howell & Co. employed 460 people and declared itself the largest single manufacturer of walking sticks in the world. Such was the quality of the work that, in 1900, the company was awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris Industrial Exhibition.  * http://yzbirds.com/workfiles/howellhist.html
