A great English Automaton Walkingstick. London, circa 1890

This admirable elephant ivory handle of 5 cm high x 8,5 cm to the side x 3,5 cm wide, is carved representing a great example of an Automaton Duck with a well figured feathered coat and coloured with divers reddish shadows and dark-green, the head is emphasized with two sparkling colored glass eyes.  When the tiny silver button on the back of the collar is depressed, the static face gives the impression to come to live, making very gently the noise: guacs, guash and opening the beak showing his red tongue. The detail is astonishing!  It has a silver collar with English marks, as T, the panther head for London, HA, and it is personalized with the name Louie. It is on top of a select, ebony-shaft and ending with a dark-horn tip. The O.L.is 98 cm. This Automaton is very much in the taste of Brigg from the last quarter of the 19th century, the mechanics are working excellent, without chips or cracks the condition is perfect.

This impressive Walkingstick belongs to the rare first generation of English Automated Canes from the period around 1880, which were often produced in one single example. Mainly retailed by Brigg, they were sold at a premium and are today the great pride of the advanced cane collector. Luckily the whole cane retained all its original integrity and works perfectly.

We deliver this piece with a signed document issued by a certified appraiser, corroborating the ivory is older than 100 years and therefore before 1947.

In Native American myth the duck acts as a mediator between the sky and the water, and it was one of the creatures that helped renew the earth after the Flood. According to Hebrew tradition, the duck symbolizes immortality, while in China and Japan it represents contentment, marital bliss and fidelity. *Book of symbols
