A Countryside Hunt Terrier Dog, a tall Walking cane. England, ca. 1900

This handle depicts a wonderfully carved head of a Hunt Terrier with sparkling glass eyes and the familiar brown colouration, the carver chose a piece of wood of the same brown shadow that these adorable animals have. Such carving and motive indicate English provenance. It is 7 cm high x 9 cm lengthwise x 6 cm wide and is on top of an extraordinary fully-bark malacca shaft, the O.L. is 1,07 m ending with a horn tip. The whole cane has minimal signs of usage and the condition is perfect.

Hunt Terrier (not "hunting terrier") refers to types of terrier dogs that were attached to British hunts, horse-oriented social clubs devoted to chasing the red fox on horseback, following packs of hounds. The hunt terrier was kept for a variety of reasons, such as rat control around stables and kennels, and to run with the hounds to flush the fox from small hiding places. * Wikipedia
