A historical piece on Silver & Gold Cane Belonging to the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, America ca. 1945
Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar January 16, 1901 – August 6, 1973, was a Cuban military officer and politician who served as the elected President of Cuba from 1940 to 1944, and as its U.S.-backed military dictator from 1952 to 1959, before being overthrown during the Cuban Revolution.
The silver and gold knob handle is 4,5 cm high x 3 cm diameter, it is elaborated engraved with scrolls and an elegant gold raised-monogram of Batista’s initials FB interlaced. It is on top of a robust knobby-mahogany shaft shimmering with a beautiful honey shadow.
I acquired this exponent directly from the widow of a Brussels collector who told me that her husband purchased it at the home of an antique dealer in Havana in 1980 when Iberia flights resumed flying to this island, The Revolution Customs Office delivered a signed document the 26 of September 1980, certifying the legal export of this object, (see picture). When I heard this story and felt the weight and strength of this Walking stick, accentuated with the initials of this singular dictator, and analyzing de quality of the collection, I felt free to buy it. The OL of the cane is 88 cm, it ends with a bimetal ferrule and without chips or cracks or dents the condition is perfect!
Batista initially rose to power as part of the 1933 Revolt of the Sergeants. He then appointed himself chief of the armed forces, with the rank of colonel, and effectively controlled the five-member "pentarchy" that functioned as the collective head of state. He maintained this control until 1940 when he was himself elected President of Cuba on a populist platform. He then instated the 1940 Constitution of Cuba and served until 1944. After finishing his term he lived in Florida, returning to Cuba to run for president in 1952.
