Nautical octogonal-figure, Whalers Art Cane, England or USA ca. 1880

Whale hunting was a prosperous industry in the nineteenth century. By definition, Whalers Art is an Art form produced by mariners at sea. The materials used were largely bony leftovers, whale ivory, skeletal whalebone and baleen. These are often combined with exotic materials picked up at sea or in various ports of call.

This single piece of sperm whale ivory handle, is carved in two segments, the first one in octagonal-diamond shape and tapering down, is 6 cm high x 4 cm lengthwise, the second one as an octagonal column that supports the octagonal volume, there is a baleen collar.

It is on top of a smooth tapered whalebone shaft plain carved and ending with a smooth taper. The O.L. is 88 cm.

This Whalers Art piece still has minimal signals of usage. Without chips or cracks, the condition is perfect.

This nautical cane, distinguished by its use of materials from the ocean, stands out with its classic design and perfect execution.

We deliver this piece with a signed document issued by a certified appraiser, corroborating the ivory is older than 100 years and therefore before 1947.
