Troubadour cat, character of The Reynard the fox fables. Germany, ca. 1880
Reynard the fox is a literary cycle of medieval north European fables largely concerned with the main character Reynard, an anthropomorphic red fox, a trickster figure. His adventures usually involve other anthropomorphic talking animals, and the core stories are often seen as parodies of medieval literature as well as a satire of political and religious institutions.
The figure represented here is Tybalt the cat or Prince of cats, one of the characters of the mentioned fables wearing medieval troubadour clothes and playing his guitar, two skinned mice are hanging from his belt, and they are ready for his next snack. This handle measure 20 cm high x 4 cm lengthwise x 3 cm wide, it is carved on a piece of ivory. There is a collar topped with an elegant buckle and the O.L. It is 86 cm on top of a malacca shaft and topped with an ivory tip. It shows signs of having been used and the condition is excellent.
We deliver this piece with a signed document issued by a certified appraiser, corroborating the ivory is older than 100 years and therefore before 1947.
