Whalers Art One-piece of wood Walking stick, U.S.A. or England ca. 1880


When a whale hunter retired, he continued to scrimshaw at home, using more sophisticated tools, it was a good way to pass the time and earn a little money, they persevered practicing their knowledge as sculptors and nevertheless, we continue to denominate it whaler’s art.

 

The bulky handle, carved as a Turkish knot, woven with doubled rope is 4 cm high and 4 cm diameter. The shaft is carved in two different sections, Woven with three ropes interlaced the upper one and a very intricate twisting the lower, there are two Celtic knots among the three sections. It is ending with a 3 cm smoot taper tip which shows signs of having supported a ferrule. This Whaler’s art exemplar is carved in one piece of Beechwood and varnished with a reddish tint. With no cracks or chips or insect’s damages, the condition is excellent.
