Whalers Art, One-piece of wood Walking stick, U.S.A. or England ca. 1880
When a whale-man retired, he continued to scrimshaw at home, using more sophisticated tools, it was a good way to pass the time and earn a little money, they persevered practising their knowledge as sculptors and nevertheless, we continue to denominate it whaler’s art.
The handle of this cane is carved in the form of a Turkish knot on top of a twisted column that is 3,5 cm high x 4,5 cm diameter, the twisted column is 12,5 cm high and 2,5 cm diameter, there is a collar, carved as a Celtic woven pattern. The shaft is carved in two different segments: Twisted the first one and thick saw-tooth grain the second one, there is a Celtic woven collar in the middle, it is varnished with a dark tint and ending with a smoot taper bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 93 and it is carved in one piece of unknown wood. With no cracks or chips or insect’s damages, the condition is excellent.
