Pet-dog Dandy Cane, ca. 1900
This charming cane is fashioned in a single piece of stepped rattan, the figure depicts a masterly carved pet-dog with inserted glass eyes and coloured face. The image is rendered on an impressionist way, giving the effect that the animal is running and its hair is carried by the wind. Such kind of carving indicates English provenance.
The head is 11 cm to the side x 4 cm wide. It is marked with the incised letters S.D.L. in a metal badge probably from a retailer. The O.L. is 93 cm, it ends with a horn tip. The whole cane has minimal signs of usage, the condition is excellent.
This mascot cane remained for over 50 years in an extensive walking stick collection in Italy.
* In nearly every world mythology, our constant companion the dog has come to be associated with our constant companion, death. Wild carrion devourers sniffing and consuming the death, tame, ever-hungry, digging into the depths of the earth with their paws, burying or finding bones, dogs attend death and assimilate death. * The book of Symbols.
