Lying Horse Cane. England, ca. 1900
This large red-deer antler handle is carved depicting a horse lying flat with folded legs and raised neck, his face with an open mouth is decorated with two inset glass eyes and an amusing mane, the skilful carver used the natural indentations of the horn to decorate the animal's back.
This enjoyable cane is 5,5 cm high x 15 cm to the side x 3 cm wide and is on top of sound malacca shaft, there is a metal collar decorated with scrolls. The O.L. of the cane is 88 cm and is ending with an old bimetal ferrule. Without any chips or cracks in the handle, the condition is excellent!
Horses have appeared in works of art throughout history. The creating artist of this cane must have exceptional knowledge of the subject.
